The History of Israel-Palestine

An interactive story

Public interest in the conflict between Israel and Palestine has recently been revived by renewed violence. News coverage of the conflict today does not provide any context about the roots of this conflict. Most people consider this to be a tussle between two nations, and believe its roots lie in religious ideology or zealotry. Some even conflate it with other kinds of Islamist extemism.

The reality, however, is different and much more complex. Far from a religious conflict, this conflict is a clash of two nationalisms. It is a struggle between two nationalist movements that developed in opposition to each other in the pre-World War 1 era. Both nationalisms were shaped and influenced by variety of events in many different was, over the course of about 50 years.
